Judging

Each entry will be judged by a panel of FIVE (5) adjudicators!

All adjudicators are highly sought after judges, choreographers, and performers from across North America.


Marking System

Scoring System

SHOCK Dance Challenge prides itself on a fair and unbiased marking system.

The FIVE (5) adjudicators will score each entry out of 100. The highest and lowest scores will be thrown out. The 3 remaining scores will be summed and averaged to produce the final score out of 100.*

Adjudicators will score each entry based on the following criteria:

  • 50% performance quality
  • 50% technical execution

* In the event of a tie, ALL 5 adjudicator scores will be summed and averaged to produce a final score out of 100. This applies to ties within a category and overall standings.

Emerald: 93.00 & up
Platinum: 90.00 » 92.99
Gold: 87.00 » 89.99
Silver: 84.00 » 86.99
Bronze: Less than 84.00

First (1st), second (2nd), and third (3rd) placements will be awarded in categories containing two (2) or more entries.

In the event of a single entry in a category, the entry will ALWAYS be announced and recognized with an Emerald, Platinum, Gold, Silver or Bronze award.

In the event of more than 3 entries in a category, entries that do not place first (1st), second (2nd) or third (3rd) in the category will ALWAYS be announced and recognized with an Emerald, Platinum, Gold, Silver or Bronze award.

Overall Awards

Novice Overalls

The top 5 scoring NOVICE routines will be announced and presented with trophies. The top 3 scoring NOVICE routines will be presented with cash awards.*

Pre-Competitive Overalls

The top 5 scoring PRE-COMPETITIVE routines will be announced and presented with trophies. The top 3 scoring PRE-COMPETITIVE routines will be presented with cash awards.*

Competitive Overalls

Solo
The top 10 scoring solos for each age division (MINI, JUNIOR, INTERMEDIATE, and SENIOR) will be announced and presented with trophies. The top 3 scoring solos in each age division (MINI, JUNIOR, INTERMEDIATE, and SENIOR) will be presented with cash awards.*

Duet/Trio
The top 10 scoring duet/trios for each age division (MINI, JUNIOR, INTERMEDIATE, and SENIOR) will be announced and presented with trophies. The top 3 scoring duet/trios in each age division (MINI, JUNIOR, INTERMEDIATE, and SENIOR) will be presented with cash awards.

Groups/Large Groups
The top 10 scoring groups/large groups for each age division (MINI, JUNIOR, INTERMEDIATE, and SENIOR) will be announced and presented with trophies. The top 3 scoring groups/large groups in each age division (MINI, JUNIOR, INTERMEDIATE, and SENIOR) will be presented with cash awards.

Lines/Extended Lines
The top 10 scoring lines/extended lines for each age division (MINI, JUNIOR, INTERMEDIATE, and SENIOR) will be announced and presented with trophies. The top 3 scoring lines/extended lines in each age division (MINI, JUNIOR, INTERMEDIATE, and SENIOR) will be presented with cash awards.

Production
The top scoring production of the competition will be announced and presented with a trophy and cash award. A minimum of 2 productions must be entered in order for the trophy to be presented. A minimum of 3 productions must be entered in order for the cash award to be presented.


Adult

The top scoring ADULT routine of the competition will be announced and presented with a trophy and cash award. A minimum of 3 ADULT routines must be entered in order for the trophy to be presented. A minimum of 5 ADULT routines must be entered in order for the cash award to be presented.


Professional

The top scoring PROFESSIONAL routine of the competition will be announced and presented with a trophy and cash award. A minimum of 3 PROFESSIONAL routines must be entered in order for the trophy to be presented. A minimum of 5 PROFESSIONAL routines must be entered in order for the cash award to be presented.

* A dancer who performs 2 or more solos is eligible to receive an overall award for EACH solo routine!


Special Awards

A total of 5 Special Awards and 1 "Choreography of the Session Award" will be presented at each awards session.

Discipline Awards

COMPETITIVE routines that achieve the top mark in each of the following disciplines will receive a plaque and cash award:

Workshop Scholarships

Judge's Choice Awards

The Judges Choice Awards will be determined by the panel of FIVE adjudicators. The award recipients will receive a plaque and cash award.

Ultimate SHOCK Showdown

The Ultimate SHOCK Showdown is the most exciting and competitive dance battle showcasing the best of the best from each studio.

The Ultimate SHOCK Showdown will be divided into 2 divisions: MINI/JUNIOR (ages 12 & under) and INTERMEDIATE/SENIOR (13 & up).

Each studio is permitted to enter 1 routine to compete in the MINI/JUNIOR division and 1 routine to compete in the INTERMEDIATE/SENIOR division.

Routines entered into the Ultimate SHOCK Showdown will be chosen by the studio director.

In order to compete in the Ultimate SHOCK Showdown, the following rules apply:

  • Only groups, large groups, lines and extended lines entered in the COMPETITIVE category are eligible
  • The studio must enter a minimum of 15 routines to be eligible
  • The studio must enter a minimum of 5 NOVICE, PRE-COMPETITIVE or COMPETITIVE groups, large groups, lines or extended lines to be eligible
  • Solos and duet/trios are not eligible
  • Professional, Adult or Production routines are not eligible
  • A routine that does not receive an overall award is still eligible

The Ultimate SHOCK Showdown will be adjudicated by the FIVE (5) adjudicators based on the following criteria: audience appeal, performance quality, and technical execution.

The Ultimate SHOCK Showdown Champions will be presented a championship trophy, cash award, and group photo featured on the SHOCK Dance Challenge website and following years' programs!

The runner-up will be presented with a crystal trophy.


SHOCK Studio Standings

SHOCK Studio Standings is the best way to keep the dancers pumped and motivated throughout the competition!

The SHOCK Studio Standings are determined by summing the top 10 scoring routines from each studio, resulting in a final score out of a thousand (1000).

In order to participate in the SHOCK Studio Standings, the following rules apply:

  • The studio must enter a minimum of 15 routines to be eligible
  • The studio must enter a minimum of 5 NOVICE, PRE-COMPETITIVE or COMPETITIVE groups, large groups, lines or extended lines to be eligible
  • Solos, duet/trios, groups, large groups, lines and extended lines entered in a NOVICE, PRE-COMPETITIVE and COMPETITIVE category count towards studio standings
  • Adult and Professional routines do not count towards studio standings

During the final overall awards session, the top 5 studios will be presented with trophies and SHOCK Dance Challenge scholarships.

SHOCK Dance Challenge reserves the right to change the awards based on the number of entries.
